Skate Malawi Community Interest Company is a not for profit social enterprise working, with Malawian people and organisations, toward the goals of facilitating skate culture in Malawi and building a community owned and operated roller skating rink and skate park in Malawi.
The idea was formed in 2016 whilst members of the team managed a roller disco in Glasgow Scotland. A research trip was undertaken in early 2018 to find local collaborators and to canvas the opinions and ideas of people living in Malawi. Overwhelmed by the positive response to the idea we set about formalising as a Community Interest Company. In September 2018 we took roller skating equipment to Malawi and successfully organised and ran Malawi's first ever roller skating lessons and roller discos at Lake of Stars Festival's 15th anniversary event. Whilst there we took part in the 'Day of Ideas' which saw 2500 young people from schools and colleges in Senga Bay come to the festival for music, activities, and talks. Check out our gallery page to see images of us teaching first time skaters at the event.
We believe that roller skating is a fun and inclusive activity which builds confidence, community social skills and improves fitness. A skate park offers a vital third space for young people away from home and school for the development of new skills, ideas and friendships.
Our highly motivated and dedicated team have years of experience running and managing roller skating events in Glasgow, Scotland. We are skilled skaters with many hours of teaching experience. Our roles will be to raise funds for the building of the skating facility and to train people in how to run a successful roller rink and skate park.
Until now the project has been entirely self-funded. If you would like to help get Malawi rolling or offer support to the project please send us an email via our contact page.
